What is a Fiber Patch Cord?

Fiber patch cords are used to make patch cords from the device to the fiber optic cabling link, with a thicker protective layer.

Fiber jumper structure

The center of the fiber patch cord is the light-transmitting glass core. In a multimode fiber, the core has a diameter of 50 μm to 65 μm, which is roughly equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. The single mode fiber core has a diameter of 8 μm to 10 μm. The outside of the core is surrounded by a glass envelope having a lower index of refraction than the core to maintain the fiber within the core. Next to it is a thin plastic jacket to protect the envelope.

Fiber jumper classification

According to the connector structure, it can be divided into: FC jumper, SC jumper, ST jumper, LC jumper, MTRJ jumper, MPO jumper, MU jumper, SMA jumper, FDDI jumper, E2000 jumper, DIN4 Jumpers, D4 jumpers, and more. More common fiber jumpers can also be divided into FC-FC, FC-SC, FC-LC, FC-ST, SC-SC, SC-ST and so on.

1 FC type fiber jumper: The external reinforcement method is a metal sleeve, and the fastening method is a turnbuckle. Generally used on the ODF side (the most used on the patch panel)

2SC type fiber jumper: The connector that connects the GBIC optical module. Its outer casing is rectangular, and the fastening method is plug-and-pull type without rotating. (most used on router switches)

3ST type optical fiber jumper: commonly used in optical fiber distribution frame, the outer casing is round and the fastening method is screw buckle. (For 10Base-F connections, the connector is usually of the ST type. Commonly used for fiber distribution frames)

4LC fiber jumper: A connector that connects to an SFP module. It is made with a convenient modular jack (RJ) latch mechanism. (used by routers)

Fiber patch cord products are widely used in: communication room, fiber to the home, local area network, fiber optic sensor, fiber optic communication system, fiber optic connection transmission equipment, defense war preparation and so on.

The difference between fiber jumper and pigtail

Fiber patch cords are used to make patch cords from the device to the fiber optic cabling link. There is a thicker protective layer, which is generally used for the connection between the optical transceiver and the terminal box.

The pigtail has a connector at one end and a broken end of the cable core at the other end. It is connected to the core of other fiber optic cables by welding.
