Optical fiber sensing technology

Since the optical fiber can be used not only as a transmission medium for light waves, but also when the light wave propagates in the optical fiber, it characterizes the characteristic parameters (amplitude, phase, polarization state, wavelength, etc.) of the light wave due to external factors (such as temperature, pressure, magnetic field, electric field, displacement, etc.). Indirect or direct changes in the role of the fiber can be used as a sensor element to detect various measurements (physical quantities, chemical quantities and biomass), which is the basic principle of fiber optic sensors.

Classification of optical fiber sensing technology

Optical fiber sensors can be divided into two types: sensing type (intrinsic type) and light transmission type (extrinsic type). The use of external factors to change the characteristic parameters of light in the optical fiber, thereby measuring and transmitting external factors, is called a sensing type optical fiber sensor, which has the characteristics of sensing integration, and information acquisition and transmission are all in the optical fiber. The light-transmitting type optical fiber sensor refers to the characteristic quantity measured by other sensitive components, and the data transmission by the optical fiber is characterized in that the existing sensor is fully utilized, and the utility model is convenient for popularization and application. Both types of fiber optic sensors can be subdivided into optical emphasis, phase modulation, polarization modulation, and wavelength modulation.
